Chapter Five: Persistent Suitors Win Even the Most Chaste Hearts
At lunchtime, Zhang Jian shamelessly approached Jiang Shiyi again.
He looked at her intently and said, “Shiyi, little sister, I brought you some chicken soup.”
“I’m already full. I can’t drink any more chicken soup,” Jiang Shiyi replied without even sparing him a glance.
Zhang Jian had ulterior motives and, not bothering to argue about the soup anymore, he set down the insulated lunchbox and eagerly laid out all his family heirlooms in front of her.
“Shiyi, little sister, I truly like you. If we get married, all these things will belong to you.”
Jiang Shiyi didn’t even bother looking at those items and flatly refused, “I don’t like you, and I have no interest in your possessions.”
“It’s okay if you don’t like me, but you absolutely must not marry that Chen bastard. That Chen has harmed many good families' daughters,” Zhang Jian blurted out everything he knew in panic.
Jiang Shiyi was confused, wondering what marriage to a Chen had to do with anything.
Just as she was about to ask for clarification, a shouting voice came from nearby: “You little bastard! You think you’re tough, huh? How dare you…”
Yu Hongmei wanted to say something but thought better of it and fell silent.
That noon, she noticed her son sneaking around the house. Before they had even started eating, the filial son quickly packed the chicken soup into the insulated box.
Only later did she realize the heirlooms were gone from the room, so she hurried after him, afraid that if she was late, their belongings would end up in Jiang Shiyi’s hands.
Yu Hongmei rushed forward, grabbed her son by the ear, and pulled him away.
Jiang Shiyi was too tired to comment on this bizarre scene. Just as she was about to leave, a figure appeared before her.
Huo Shaoqin held a freshly picked bouquet of wildflowers and shyly approached Jiang Shiyi.
“Hi, we meet again. Seems our fate is quite strong.”
Jiang Shiyi glanced at him coldly and merely said, “Oh.”
Huo Shaoqin was overjoyed that this ‘goddess’ hadn’t told him to get lost this time.
He thought to himself, “The chaste woman fears the persistent lover.”
Jiang Shiyi was annoyed and had no patience to indulge this fool; she didn’t even bother telling him to scram and simply got up to leave.
Huo Shaoqin stubbornly followed, unleashing his usual flirtatious lines.
“Beautiful lady, your charm truly captivates me. Since we last met, I’ve fallen for you at first sight. May I know your name?”
Jiang Shiyi turned back impatiently, a faint smirk playing on her lips as she brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “My name is ‘Heartbreaker’.”
Huo Shaoqin laughed heartily and replied with a grin, “What a coincidence, I’m ‘Sunny Handsome Boy’.”
Jiang Shiyi clicked her tongue in disdain. If she weren’t trying to glean some information about Minister Huo from him, she wouldn’t waste a word on this big fool.
It was as if someone heard her thoughts because the next moment, she saw the object of her affection—the Minister Huo—appearing not far off.
Thinking of how her heart’s fluttering score had reached 80 points yesterday, she quickly switched gears, turning to Huo Shaoqin with a sweet smile as she took the wildflowers. “Sunny Handsome Boy, I don’t like wildflowers. If you want to woo me next time, remember to bring a bouquet of red roses.”
“Ah?” Huo Shaoqin was shocked by her complete turnaround and felt his mind short-circuit.
Meanwhile, Huo Yixun, having just finished briefing Chief of Staff Yang, turned and saw Jiang Shiyi walking slowly toward him, holding a bouquet.
Her steps were graceful, her waist swaying gently, as if she didn’t see him, only paying attention to the flowers in her hands.
Huo Yixun cast a single glance, expressionless, and withdrew his gaze.
Dressed sharply, his posture erect and aura cold, he seemed to command the very air around him.
Yet she simply ignored his presence, silently brushing past him.
As they passed each other, Jiang Shiyi glanced at him from the corner of her eye, the sharp curve of her profile tinged with faint detachment and indifference.
She withdrew her gaze, a triumphant smile playing on her delicate face.
As she passed by, Huo Yixun clenched his jaw, a cold sneer escaping his nostrils.
Just last night, this woman had thrown herself into his arms, and now, barely a dozen hours later, he saw his brother laughing and chatting casually with her.
His expression grew colder as he looked at the still bewildered Huo Shaoqin.
The latter seemed to sense danger and instinctively looked toward them.
Of course!
Known as the cold-faced Yama King, Huo Yixun stood there, causing the playboy younger brother to jump in fright.
“Brother—no, Minister, what are you doing here?”
Huo Yixun glanced at him sharply and asked sternly, “What are you doing?”
Under the cold gaze, Huo Shaoqin immediately tensed up. “I—I’m just out for a walk…”
“Ahem… If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to the team.”
With that, Huo Shaoqin tried to slip away.
Huo Yixun cut him off, “How long have you known her?”
“Who?”
Huo Shaoqin was momentarily stunned, then realized, “You mean my goddess? We’ve only known each other for a day.”
Hmm… Although yesterday his goddess had told him to get lost.
One day?
Ha!
This woman’s skills were truly remarkable.
Within just one day, she had been weaving between three men.
Huo Yixun glanced at his infatuated playboy brother and said coldly, “Stay away from that woman. She’s not simple.”
Huo Shaoqin looked at him in surprise. “You’ve known the goddess for a while?”
Huo Yixun pressed his thin lips together, a mocking smile playing on his face.
Indeed.
He had known her for some time, and just last night, she had clung tightly to him.
While Huo Yixun remained silent, Huo Shaoqin had already slipped away.
He didn’t care whether his goddess was complicated or not.
After all, he was just a playboy heir; in two years, after leaving the service, he would still be the young master of the Huo family, indulging in the dazzling Beijing social scene.
Elsewhere, Jiang Shiyi found a quiet spot and opened her system panel.
Her heart flutter score had increased by 90 points.
A triumphant expression spread across her delicate face.
At the same time, she began to ponder. She had used the provocation tactic twice already; following the rule of “things don’t happen more than thrice,” she decided to change her approach.
When one’s mood improved, everything seemed more agreeable.
Back at the medical station, the team leader brought a young woman dressed in nurse’s uniform to Jiang Shiyi.
“Qin Jie discovered this morning that she’s pregnant and isn’t suitable to continue working here. This is someone newly assigned by the hospital.”
In a good mood, Jiang Shiyi naturally greeted the young woman with a smile.
“Hello, my name is Jiang Shiyi.”
“Hello, I’m Wang Chuxin, a newly arrived intern nurse.”
