Ye Qiao suddenly heard Fu Juechuan’s confession and was somewhat flattered.
“Brother Fu, doesn’t this mean I’m taking advantage of you by marrying so well?” Ye Qiao asked innocently.
Fu Juechuan hadn’t expected her to be completely unconcerned about his lie; instead, she seemed genuinely amused.
“You’re not angry that I lied?” Fu Juechuan looked up at her, his eyes swirling with complex emotions, but upon seeing no trace of resentment in her gaze, he fell silent.
“No, I’m not angry. This is your matter, Brother Fu. Whoever your father is doesn’t affect my life. Besides, I know you must have your reasons for hiding your identity.”
“You’ve been in the military for four years, never revealing your true identity, and now that you’ve met me, you have to tell me. I was actually worried it might affect you,” Ye Qiao said earnestly, then asked with concern, “Brother Fu, are you sure telling me this won’t affect you?”
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. Even my father, unless it endangers his safety, I won’t say a word,” Ye Qiao promised, covering her mouth.
What had worried Fu Juechuan before no longer felt like a big deal after seeing her reaction.
“Qiao Qiao, you did the right thing. I have an agreement with my father to conceal my identity in the military. This is between him and me. If it ever threatens my uncle, you just let me know,” Fu Juechuan nodded solemnly, supporting Ye Qiao’s perspective.
For some reason, Ye Qiao found him a little endearing.
Startled by the sudden thought, she quickly dismissed it.
“I understand, Brother Fu.”
“Mm. The bride price I gave has nothing to do with my father. If anyone causes you trouble because of this, don’t be afraid—just send them away,” Fu Juechuan said softly, his heart softening as he reminded Ye Qiao in advance.
Ye Qiao was shocked and instinctively asked, “Brother Fu, do you mean someone is eyeing the inheritance your mother left? Who is it?”
She was already racking her brain trying to figure out who around Fu Juechuan might be plotting against him.
“It’s my second uncle, Fu Heng. He’s been trying to match his adopted daughter, Zheng Shi, with me. I refused. He’s obsessed with my marriage matters. Now that he knows I’m getting married, he might say unpleasant things to you. Knowing how much I value you, he will definitely try to provoke you in this regard,” Fu Juechuan said apologetically, looking up, “I’ve dragged you into this.”
Ye Qiao nodded slightly, stunned by the news.
In her previous life, she knew that Fu Heng was genuinely sincere toward Fu Juechuan, even better than Fu Shouzhang, his biological father.
As for why he insisted Fu Juechuan marry his adopted daughter, she was unclear—only that Fu Juechuan never ended up marrying Zheng Shi.
“Brother Fu, is it possible that Uncle Fu Heng’s concern for you is sincere?” Ye Qiao cautiously asked.
Fu Juechuan suddenly looked at her, seeming puzzled by her question. “Maybe there’s some sincerity.”
But he still rejected Fu Heng.

Ye Qiao knew she couldn’t convince Fu Juechuan of Fu Heng’s sincerity with a few words, especially since Fu Heng’s actions were indeed easy to misinterpret. However, she recalled that there was indeed a real traitor close to Fu Juechuan.
“Brother Fu, isn’t Jiang Yuan doing business in Huaicheng?”
Ye Qiao explained, “Jiang Yuan mentioned it during the morning toast.”
“Mm.” Fu Juechuan responded and looked up at her, his voice steady. “Is there something you need help with?”
“No, I just heard from Jiang Yuan that his company, Yuanke, seems to be in trouble, nearing bankruptcy. I suspect the problem lies in the financial department. Why don’t you check with whoever’s in charge of finances?” Ye Qiao couldn’t be too explicit.
She knew Jiang Yuan had come to Huaicheng to facilitate liaising with Fu Juechuan and to take care of things.
He didn’t come alone, but brought along Yu Jun, the son of the nanny who cared for Fu Juechuan when he was a child. Yu Jun appeared trustworthy but had already betrayed him.
Fu Juechuan seemed to have some affection for him and tolerated him, not realizing Yu Jun was the very cause of Jiang Yuan’s business failure.
Fu Juechuan was familiar with business operations. Though he couldn’t engage in commerce due to his military service, he surprisingly had a knack for it. Yet, he wasn’t interested in business and only gave advice when Jiang Yuan asked.
“…I’ll talk to Jiang Yuan,” Fu Juechuan said, “Is this urgent?”
“Very!” Ye Qiao nodded seriously. “If an accountant wants to do something, they can just siphon off the money directly.”
“I’ll inform Jiang Yuan right away.” Fu Juechuan valued Ye Qiao and didn’t ignore her words, whether or not it would help—it was the thought that counted.
Ye Qiao quickly handed him her phone, her face hopeful.
Fu Juechuan called Jiang Yuan in front of her and gave a brief reminder.
When he hung up, he met Ye Qiao’s beaming smile.
His eyes suddenly darkened, and he stood up abruptly.
Confused, Ye Qiao looked up and saw a pair of long legs, a figure framed by double doors, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist. For some reason, his belt was tightly fastened, making his muscles bulge.
It wasn’t strange; it accentuated his powerful physique.
Ye Qiao found herself unable to look away, her heart skipping a beat.
Snapping out of it, she pinched her hot earlobes and cleared her throat. “Brother Fu, I prepared a gift for you. Could you come to my room for a moment?”
Fu Juechuan had already controlled his emotions. He nodded and followed Ye Qiao upstairs into her room.
Ye Qiao said, “Brother Fu, have a seat. I’ll go tidy up.”

Seeing the room was a bit messy, she quickly got up and folded the pajamas on the bed, putting them back in the wardrobe.
Then she found a paper bag she had saved, opened a drawer, and placed several items inside.
A watch.
A razor.
Outdoor sunglasses.
A belt.
She had specially asked someone to buy these from the Friendship Store, spending quite a few foreign exchange coupons. Compared to Fu Juechuan’s bride price, it wasn’t much, but it was still a heartfelt gift she wanted to give him.
“Brother Fu, this is the gift I prepared for you,” Ye Qiao said, carrying the bag as she turned to the man sitting on the edge of the bed and handed it to him.
“My gift isn’t very valuable, so please don’t mind it,” she whispered.
Fu Juechuan took it and saw all the valuable items inside. He immediately stood up, placing the gift on the bed. “I can’t accept this. It’s too expensive.”
“Brother Fu, you gave me so much, and I accepted it all. Don’t you like it when I give you something?”
Ye Qiao hurriedly reached out and pulled him, unwilling to let him leave.
Unexpectedly, her step faltered, and she bumped into Fu Juechuan’s chest. She gasped and quickly looked up to steady herself.
“Ah…” Ye Qiao grabbed her hair, which had been pulled painfully by his button, and said softly, “Brother Fu, don’t move. My hair got caught on your button. It hurts.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll untangle it.” Fu Juechuan restrained his pounding heart and bent down to undo the button. However, their height difference meant that whenever he stood straight, her hair was pulled.
“Ouch, ouch, ouch…”
Fu Juechuan panicked, saw the nearby desk, and immediately picked her up, sitting her down on it.
Ye Qiao looked up dazedly, her eyes meeting Fu Juechuan’s handsome face as he lowered his gaze to untangle the hair caught in the button, his sculpted features suddenly looming large before her eyes.
