Jonathan, something’s wrong. The Mind Flayer has picked up speed and is racing straight for the residential district. At our pace, we’ll never stop it in time, and there are already swarms of hellhounds converging on the neighborhood.

I can see Sheriff Hope and the others too. They’re surrounded by a mass of hellhounds, trapped in several houses. The Mind Flayer is heading right for them. It will be there any moment now.

The boy with the number called out in panic. They were still several miles from the neighborhood; unless they could fly, they would never make it in time.

Fly?

Lynn had an inspiration. Of course they could fly. He stopped at once and looked at Michael and Stefan.

“Transform into bats and carry us to the neighborhood.”

Michael said nothing. He spread his great wings at once, scooped up the boy with the number, and soared into the air.

Stefan also unfurled his wings and looked at Lynn with a half-smile, as if to say: dare you trust me to carry you?

Lynn smiled faintly. He let Stefan rise into the air first, then sprang upward, grabbed his legs, and shouted, “Keep up with Michael. Don’t even think of shaking me off, and don’t think of using this chance to run. Stay about ten meters up. If I see you climb any higher, I’ll drag you down and sever your head.”

Stefan nodded. He had seen the other’s elongated-arm attacks and knew escape was impossible. Besides, he had no intention of running.

The two vampires spread their wings and sped toward the neighborhood. The werewolf youths continued to chase below, but soon they were left far behind.

They flew like the wind. Before long, Lynn caught sight of a bizarre giant monster surging along the road in front of the neighborhood.

It was made entirely of vivid red flesh, shaped like an enormous king crab magnified dozens of times, with six massive limbs, thick and long. Its head still had a flowerlike shape, and its mouth was packed with sharp teeth. Its bulk was terrifying; it could swallow a small car in one bite.

Clearly, this was the true form of the Mind Flayer: a monster assembled from absorbed human matter, the final boss of the third season, a creature so vile it made one lose one’s appetite.

And this giant monster was even larger than the one in the original series. No doubt the altered storyline had led it to absorb the bodies of many soldiers, making its true form far more formidable.

Inside a house in the Mind Flayer’s path, hordes of hellhounds were pressing in again and again under the leadership of seven or eight greater demons.

Four young werewolves blocked the doorway, while Eric and Eddie stood behind them, one wielding a sword and the other a spike, tirelessly fending off the hellhounds and greater demons rushing forward.

But there were well over a hundred hellhounds outside, crashing in like a tide, wave after wave. Many circled around behind them and smashed through the walls to attack from the rear.

Bang!

A hellhound had just burst into the house when a baseball bat swung across and sent it flying into the wall.

There stood Dustin, holding the bat, in vampire form, with a pair of wings more than four meters wide spread behind him, making him look oddly mismatched.

“Heh heh, I’m not afraid of you anymore. I’m the Blade now—though, admittedly, I don’t have a blade.”

Crash, crash, crash...

Just as Dustin was feeling smug, the windows shattered one after another, and a large pack of hellhounds poured into the house. Rising from the floor, they surrounded him with hungry eyes.

“Uh, actually, I was just passing by. You all go ahead and play without me.”

Dustin’s grin vanished. The hellhounds surged at him, and he fled in terror, scrambling and rolling toward the door.

“This is bad. The hellhounds are getting in!”

Eric looked back, his expression changing drastically. Without the advantage of terrain, even if they were skilled fighters, they would never kill so many hellhounds.

“It’s over!”

The thought had barely crossed his mind when six or seven crimson shadows fell from the sky, pierced through the roof, and flew into the pack of hellhounds.

Eric and Dustin clearly saw those seven blood shadows flickering and weaving through the hounds. After only a few passes, every hellhound swayed and collapsed to the ground as though all their strength had been drained away.

At the same time, the seven blood shadows swept overhead, rushed out of the house, and charged straight at the great pack of hellhounds and greater demons, unstoppable and invincible.

In the blink of an eye, the hellhound army surging in like a tide was slaughtered one after another beneath those blood shadows. The seven shadows became vividly lifelike, like seven transparent figures suspended in the air, staring fixedly into the night sky.

They looked up and saw two enormous black silhouettes descending slowly. One held the number called person in its arms, while beneath the feet of the other dangled a familiar figure: Jonathan.

“Oh, so it’s you!”

Dustin shouted with excitement. Lynn did not have Stefan put him down and instead called to the people below, “The Mind Flayer has transformed into a giant monster. It’s almost here. We have to choose favorable ground. Where are Sheriff Hope and the others?”

Eric stepped forward and replied, “He’s teamed up with Nick and Lucas, and they’ve taken four more werewolves to rescue the other residents.”

“Good. We’ll head there at once, regroup with them, and choose our battlefield while we finish off the Mind Flayer’s true form.”

With that, Lynn told Stefan to fly deeper into the neighborhood, and Eric and the others quickly followed below.

Inside a house deeper in the district, Nick and Lucas were fighting desperately alongside two werewolves against the hellhounds, while a family of four cowered behind them in trembling fear.

One boy was sprawled on the floor screaming in agony. It turned out to be the school bully, Tommy, and his family.

After hearing the alert, Tommy’s family had not taken it seriously at all and were still sitting in the living room watching television, right up until two hellhounds burst in and sent them shrieking.

Tommy and his father fought desperately. Though they managed to kill two hellhounds, Tommy was bitten in the thigh and knocked to the ground, writhing in pain. At the same time, three more hellhounds rushed in, and the family of four seemed about to die beneath their jaws.

Just then, Nick arrived with two werewolves and slew the three hellhounds, saving them.

But more and more hellhounds kept gathering, surging forward in endless waves. Just as they were about to be overwhelmed, a dark silhouette crashed to the ground with a thunderous impact, stomping a greater demon to death.

Ding! Congratulations, Host, for killing a level five greater demon. Source power +40.

Hearing the system notification, Lynn chuckled. He had effortlessly killed a greater demon, easier than picking one up off the ground.

Stefan flew down from the air. Without permission, he was not allowed to take off again on his own; otherwise Lynn would unleash the Hand of the Devil and drag him down from the sky.

The surrounding hellhounds reacted at last and swarmed toward them. Lynn drew the Star-Slaying Battle Axe and began a bloody slaughter. He had to kill as many hellhounds as possible before Michael arrived to replenish his source power.

Otherwise, once Michael got here and used the Blood Shadow Mirror, the seven blood shadows would wipe out every hellhound in the blink of an eye. Whether it was the smaller hounds or the larger ones, all would be drained dry of blood and die.

Dead hellhounds like that were useless to collect; they yielded no flesh essence or demon essence at all. He had discovered this just now when he had quietly tucked a greater demon’s corpse into his inventory after stepping on it upon landing.

So he had to grab as many hellhound corpses as he could before the blood-shadow attack, especially the greater demons. Their bodies were full of treasures, and he could not afford to let them all become food for the shadows.

With each swing of the axe, Lynn targeted the greater demons. Before Michael arrived, three greater demons had already died beneath his blade, and five smaller hounds had been slain as well, all quietly stored in his inventory.

His source power had also risen to 276 points, enough to level up again.

Then Michael arrived, and the seven blood shadows instantly cleared the field, their speed astonishing.

“By the way, where are Sheriff Hope and the others?”

Lynn stepped up to the house and asked Nick.

The exhausted Hunter of the Green Mountains panted hard and pointed to the houses behind them. “We split up here. He and Lucas took several werewolves and went to the back to rescue people.”
