Chapter 94: One Cannot Be Too Cautious
Old Ge was deeply worried that if the operation failed, Xu Lin would be made to shoulder all the blame. The patient had an extraordinary background, and that was responsibility Xu Lin could hardly bear.
“Doctor Xu, are you confident?” Old Ge tugged at Xu Lin’s sleeve and asked in a low voice, blinking at him again and again, shooting him urgent looks. “This patient is under Doctor Tao’s care. If you’re not sure...”
He did not finish the rest. He believed Xu Lin would understand: if there was no confidence, then let Tao Chunxiu continue to lead the surgery.
If anything went wrong with the patient, Tao Chunxiu would bear the main responsibility.
But if Tao Chunxiu were driven out and the patient still was not saved, then all the blame would fall on Xu Lin.
And Old Ge believed the hospital administration would be only too happy to pin the responsibility on Xu Lin.
Even though before Xu Lin arrived, they had all seemed desperate, practically wanting to invite him over themselves.
But now that Xu Lin was here, the speed with which those people had vanished made it clear enough that their motives were not pure.
If not for the fact that saving lives came first, Old Ge would have wanted to wash his hands of the whole matter too.
“Don’t worry, Old Ge. I’m confident. But if Tao Chunxiu stays here, then I won’t be so confident anymore.”
Xu Lin’s quiet explanation made Old Ge’s pupils tremble. What did that mean?
Could it be...?
Old Ge’s suspicious gaze landed on Tao Chunxiu’s somewhat guilty face, and in an instant enlightenment flashed through his mind. At the same time, anger flared up in him.
This was a hospital, a place for healing and saving lives. How dared Tao Chunxiu?
Did Tao Chunxiu not understand the consequences of a failed surgery?
Or had he long since prepared an escape route?
In that instant, Old Ge felt chilled to the bone. He had truly never expected the highly skilled and arrogant Tao Chunxiu to have such rotten character.
He would even dare to commit murder and arson!
“Understood. I’ll drive him out.” Old Ge fixed Tao Chunxiu with a sharp, hard stare and asked in a bad tone, “Will you leave on your own, or should I call the director over to take you away?”
That look, that tone, sent a chill straight into Tao Chunxiu’s heart. His pupils contracted, and the shock on his face flashed by in an instant.
He did not know whether Old Ge had seen through something, nor how much he might have seen. If the matter came to light, his life might well be in danger.
Thinking of the person lying on the operating table and the enormous background behind that person, Tao Chunxiu went numb. He tried to force out a smile, but could not manage it.
All he could do was stammer helplessly, “N-no, don’t... I’ll go myself. I’ll go myself.”
With that, Tao Chunxiu stumbled out of the operating room and almost collided with several soldiers waiting anxiously outside. His legs went weak, and he nearly dropped to his knees.
He managed a smile uglier than a sob, then,扶ing himself against the wall, left under the puzzled gazes of the soldiers.
Chen Jianshe watched Tao Chunxiu’s retreating figure, his eyes gradually narrowing. He remembered that this man was Dazi’s attending physician.
Why did he look like this?
Guilty? Panicked?
What was he guilty about? What was he panicking about?
A series of questions flashed through Chen Jianshe’s mind. Suddenly, he made a gesture to the guard beside him.
The guard nodded quickly and turned to leave. Throughout the exchange, the two said not a single word, moving with complete understanding.
Inside the operating room, the moment Xu Lin’s golden needles appeared, Old Ge’s eyes lit up. He knew Xu Lin was about to make his move.
“Old Ge, I’ll seal the wound first so it won’t harm the surrounding tissues. Then you can remove your silver needles.”
“Mm, mm.” Old Ge nodded repeatedly. At this moment, he had only one thought: cooperate fully.
As for whether Xu Lin’s medical skill would embarrass him, that was not something he was thinking about.
He studied medicine to save lives, not to show off.
Xu Lin moved swiftly. Along with the golden needles entering the body came a surge of wood-element power.
Once the wood-element power entered the patient’s body, it immediately began repairing the internal damage, effectively preventing the wound from worsening and spreading.
After Old Ge removed his silver needles, Xu Lin applied two more needles to stabilize the overall situation, and only then did he begin the surgery.
It was also at this point that Old Ge realized Xu Lin’s hands-on ability was no worse than Tao Chunxiu’s, and perhaps even better.
So what exactly was Tao Chunxiu being so arrogant about?
As a bullet was finally removed, Old Ge let out a breath of relief, and the other medical staff were almost ready to gasp out loud.
This was simply miraculous. He had actually taken the bullet out so easily. Was this person a divine doctor?
They had heard that Comrade Si had been revived by her. Sure enough, a master’s skill was beyond anything they could imagine.
Once the most difficult wound had been dealt with, the rest became much easier.
When removing the needles, Xu Lin again sent a thread of wood-element power into the patient’s body to prevent a secondary infection or any pathological change.
After everything was taken care of, Xu Lin finally ended her work to her satisfaction and stepped back to the second line. The remaining tasks were left to the other medical staff.
She and Old Ge retreated to the side, watching the staff finish up while chatting.
“Linlin, how did you tell he had a problem?”
Old Ge did not specify whom he meant, but Xu Lin understood he was referring to Tao Chunxiu.
“Easy. His expression was wrong. As a qualified doctor, even if a mistake occurs during surgery, he would never behave like that.
“Doctors are not gods. Of course they make mistakes. When they do, the normal thing is to think of a way to fix it.
“If no solution can be found, they would at least do everything possible to ask other doctors for help. But look at what he was doing?”
When Xu Lin mentioned Tao Chunxiu’s performance, her disgust was obvious. He was scratching his head in the operating room, and he had scratched so much dandruff onto his hands.
Whom was he trying to disgust? Whom was he trying to harm?
He had not left the patient even a sliver of hope.
Fortunately, her level of mystic arts was high, and she had created many talismans. The cleansing talisman was one of them.
If not for that, Xu Lin would have really wanted to smash Tao Chunxiu’s skull open on the spot.
For a filthy creature like that, Xu Lin did not even want to spare him one extra sentence. The moment she thought of speaking another word to him, she felt contaminated.
Old Ge gave a long, weary sigh, a bitter smile appearing on his face as he said, “You’re not afraid of a doctor with poor skills. What you fear is a doctor with rotten character.”
“That’s exactly it. The knife in a doctor’s hand can save a life, and it can also take one.”
Xu Lin sighed along with him.
She thought of a murder case involving a genius doctor that had once occurred in that other world.
The scale of that case had been unprecedented. Even now, thinking about it still made her uneasy.
Soon the finishing work was done. Xu Lin went forward again to check the patient’s condition, and only then did she have the nurse inform the family.
Very soon, low cries of relief and joy rose in the corridor.
When Xu Lin walked out of the operating room, what met her were pairs of grateful eyes, and, yes, one malicious glance as well.
Xu Lin tilted her head toward that gaze, but unfortunately she only caught sight of a retreating back. The person had actually turned and left.
Tsk, what a sin.
Xu Lin silently sighed, lowered the hand signs she had been forming to calculate something, and a trace of helplessness flashed in her eyes.
Who would have thought that saving someone would also create a grudge? Still, if the other party truly came looking for trouble, she would not hesitate to strike back.
After all, Xu Lin had never had any fondness for people who used underhanded methods.
Seeing Old Ge about to write up the chart, Xu Lin tugged lightly at his sleeve and reminded him in a low voice, “The person’s been saved, but we still can’t let our guard down.”
