Chapter Ninety-Six: Caught Red-Handed
Everyone was furious, surrounding the long-faced man from all sides. No matter how much he tried to explain, they only disliked Hu Xihe’s behavior. Yet he never imagined that this fire would so easily be turned back on Hu Xihe.
His attempts at justification only made things worse.
This was the man’s true nature, unrefined and lacking in social grace. When push came to shove, not a single person was willing to stand up and speak on his behalf.
Even worse, they pressed him: “If it wasn’t you, then who was it? Could it be the chief? Or one of us?”
“I...”
Hu Xihe feigned wiping away tears, then rolled up his sleeves and gestured for the crowd to disperse. “Why do you all look at me like that, Brother Huang?”
“It was you, wasn’t it? You framed me! You’re a beast in human skin, all hypocritical.”
“Tsk, it seems Brother Huang has a deep misunderstanding of me.”
“What do you want? If you want to kill me, then kill me. No need for words.”
Just as these words fell, someone nearby shouted, “Brother Huang, don’t act rashly.”
Another drew a blade and thrust it straight at the long-faced man’s chest.
With nowhere to retreat, the long-faced man closed his eyes, expecting a fatal strike. But instead of cold death, he opened his eyes to see Hu Xihe snatching the knife away and saying to the assailant, “Don’t be impulsive.”
The attacker glanced at Hu Xihe, cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and withdrew with a bow, “Chief, your generosity is great. We were too impatient.”
Hu Xihe returned the salute and then stepped closer to the long-faced man. Just as everyone thought he was about to personally execute him, the unexpected happened.
“What exactly is your purpose?” The long-faced man nearly doubted his own perception, growing more confused about Hu Xihe’s true intentions.
“Brother Huang’s words seriously wrong me. I know my past actions have been hard to justify.
But how to put this? Even the winding Yellow River will one day run clear; is there no chance for a prodigal to turn back?”
“What do you mean?” The more he listened, the more baffled he became.
“It’s simple. The genuine affection among our fellow disciples is earth-shaking. Since fate has chosen me as your chief, I, Xihe, wish to start anew.
I vow not to disappoint your expectations. And, Brother Huang, I ask you to remain by my side, watching over me at all times. Should I betray today’s promise, you may take my life whenever you wish.” Hu Xihe raised his hand and lightly tapped his neck.
His meaning was unmistakably clear.
Seizing the moment while the long-faced man was still dazed, Hu Xihe took his sleeve and stood beside him.
The long-faced man was dazed, lost in a fog. He thought he should have died but hadn’t. Looking at everyone, it felt as if he were still dreaming.
At the same time, his opinion of Hu Xihe subtly shifted...
“The chief is wise.”
“The chief is mighty.”
“...”
Without mentioning how Hu Xihe won everyone’s hearts so swiftly, Qingfen left the Hundred Wonders Peak and wentI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
