Chapter 39 This Looks Like Something Is Going On
Oh!
If they really kissed and their relationship were exposed, it wouldn't have anything to do with me.
With so many people around, surely Zhou Chenyan wouldn't take his anger out on me again, right?
I prepared to watch the show with a clear conscience.
Yet, I suddenly met Zhou Chenyan’s gaze.
Why is he looking at me?
Just as I was about to pretend I hadn't seen him, Zhou Chenyan slightly tilted his head, dodging Zhou Zhizi's kiss.
Before anyone else could look over, he pushed her in my direction.
A faint fragrance drifted over, and I sprang up as if I had touched a bomb.
My movement immediately drew everyone's attention.
Zhou Zhizi lay motionless on the sofa.
I rubbed my forehead and mumbled vaguely, "It's a bit stuffy. I'm going out for some fresh air. You guys go on."
I bypassed Zhou Chenyan's spot, opened the door, and walked out, but my mind was in complete disarray, and I had a lingering feeling that something wasn't quite right.
Given Zhou Chenyan's feelings for Zhou Zhizi, he shouldn't have dodged.
Otherwise, the celebration banquet incident from my past life wouldn't have happened.
Could it be that he didn't want others to see?
That was possible, but if he didn't want anyone to find out, he could have just stayed away.
Knowing full well it would cause a misunderstanding, he came anyway.
This man...
The more I thought about it, the more confused I became. I simply couldn't fathom Zhou Chenyan's thought process.
After getting some fresh air on the balcony for a while, I felt less and less inclined to go back inside.
I sent a message to Cancan, intending to slip away quietly.
"How much longer are you going to stand there?"
Just as I took out my phone, a voice sounded suddenly behind me.
I was so startled that I almost dropped my phone over the railing.
I glared angrily at the suddenly materialized Zhou Chenyan. "Don't you make any sound when you walk?"
"You were just too focused and didn't notice me."
He stood beside me in front of the balcony, turned around, and leaned against the railing, seemingly uninterested in the night view outside.
I turned to leave, but he caught me by the wrist.
Knowing I couldn't break free, I simply waited for him to speak.
However, after waiting for a long time, he remained silent, apparently struggling to phrase his words.
The person waiting grew impatient.
"What on earth do you want?"
"Why did you come to the company?" he asked.
"To make money."
"Didn't you just take three million from me?"
"What do you mean by 'take'?" I didn't quite like that choice of words. "That was what I deserved."
Legitimately speaking, I should be entitled to half of his assets as well.
It was a pity I couldn't contend with him for the time being, otherwise I would have fought for it no matter what.
"If you want money, you should be trying to please me, instead of resorting to such clumsy tricks."
I felt my wrist tighten, and then I was pulled straight into his arms.
My waist was imprisoned, and I instinctively arched my upper body backward.
Hoping to put some distance between us.
"If you did this to attract my attention, then congratulations, you've succeeded."
His fingers brushed gently across my cheek, their temperature chillingly low, lingering near my ear like a cold, venomous snake.
Goosebumps broke out all over my skin.
However, brute resistance was useless; the physical disparity between men and women reached its peak at this moment.
Abruptly, I softened my posture and rested my hands lightly on his shoulders.
He seemed satisfied with this change in my demeanor, and the hand stroking my cheek slowly moved behind my ear.
"There really is a reason I did this. Do you want to know?"
I leaned in closer to him and whispered right by his ear.
His body stiffened.
After all, we had been husband and wife for several years, even if the times we were intimate were limited.
I still knew that his ear was a sensitive spot.
The grip on my hand loosened slightly, and I immediately shoved him away, retreating straight to the entrance of the balcony, right behind which was the bustling corridor.
"The reason is very simple: divorce."
The moment he regained his balance, he raised his head sharply and looked at me. "You haven't grown tired of saying those two words, but I'm sick of hearing them."
"As long as you refuse to agree for a single day, I will keep saying it."
Until he finds it so annoying and tiresome that he finally signs the divorce agreement.
Footsteps echoed from behind, and my attention wavered for a split second. The man in front of me suddenly closed in, pulling me into a corner and shielding my body behind the cover of the wall.
The person approaching seemed headed this way, the sound of footsteps growing clearer.
It was the sound of high heels.
"A-Yan, are you in here?"
I immediately looked at Zhou Chenyan. He paused slightly, his gaze falling upon the wall behind me, staring at something unknown, though I was certain he wasn't looking at me.
"Your little lover is looking for you. Aren't you going out to see her?"
I purposely spoke up.
My voice was very soft.
He immediately covered my mouth. "Do you want to be watched by a crowd? Or do you want to expose your identity as the young mistress of the conglomerate?"
I grabbed his wrist and tugged, but couldn't pull it away.
So, I simply opened my mouth and bit down hard!
He let out a muffled groan, but his hand remained entirely motionless, letting me bite him. Amidst the approaching footsteps, he leaned in close to my ear once again.
"You really are sharp-tongued."
I could feel his heartbeat; it was a bit fast.
Was he scared? Or nervous?
I bit down firmly on his palm, glaring at him without the slightest intention of letting go. If Zhou Zhizi saw this, she would probably go mad.
She couldn't bear to see me have any intimate contact with Zhou Chenyan at all.
Even if it was just holding hands, she would be jealous for a long time.
The footsteps stopped just behind the wall.
I could almost imagine that if she just turned the corner and stepped onto the balcony, she would see the person she had been searching for right here.
Being bitten on the palm by me.
Bleeding profusely, yet making not a single sound.
I even hoped she would come in and drag this mad dog away immediately, so he would stop coming to pester me.
Things, however, went contrary to my wishes.
After a moment of silence, the sound of her footsteps gradually faded away.
Zhou Chenyan looked down at me, his expression devoid of any unusual emotion, as if the person whose palm had been bitten open wasn't him. "Still not letting go?"
The heavy metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, and a wave of nausea rose within me. I shoved him away forcefully and wiped the blood from the corner of my lips.
"What a pity. Your master didn't get to see you."
"What did you say?"
His expression hadn't been this ugly even when I was biting him just moments ago.
I certainly wasn't foolish enough to repeat it and entangle myself with him any further. I turned and walked quickly away from the balcony, running into Cancan, who was just coming out of the restroom, halfway down the hall.
She didn't look well, so I hurried over to support her.
"What's wrong with you?"
"I ate some iced watermelon earlier, and then drank some iced wine. My period came early..."
She looked like she was completely out of commission.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Don't you even keep track of your own dates?"
"I forgot..."
"Never mind, I'll take you back."
Mentioning leaving reminded me that my phone and bag were still in the private room.
We had no choice but to head back to pack our things, and coincidentally ran into Zhou Chenyan at the door.
Our eyes met for a fraction of a second, and I subconsciously glanced at his palm.
It was tucked inside his trouser pocket, out of sight.
Even so, I could imagine he wasn't feeling very comfortable right now.
I simply packed up my things and Cancan's, held them in my arms, and said goodbye to the colleagues, ready to leave.
However, I noticed that Zhou Zhizi, who had been sitting on the sofa all along, looked somewhat abnormal.
Her face was flushed with an unusual red.
Zhou Chenyan also noticed that something was amiss. "Zhizi?"
Zhou Zhizi suddenly lunged into his arms, clutching his sleeve, her voice laced with tears. "A-Yan, I... I feel so awful..."
Her face was flushed, covered in a sheen of sweat, her gaze hazy and her breathing rapid.
Why did this state look so much like—she had been drugged?
