Wen Ganan found the remark rather strange—clearly, he was the one who wanted to be at odds with her, so why did it sound like he was blaming her? She smiled slightly, stepped forward, took the drink that Liang Yuxiu poured, and playfully clinked glasses with him.

“Well then, President Liang, shall we call this a reconciliation? Here’s to a pleasant collaboration moving forward.”

After all, people had to look ahead. Matters of the heart were in the past; clinging onto them was pointless. Besides, they now had a partnership to maintain. Wen Ganan wasn’t foolish enough to let old grievances ruin their professional relationship.

Liang Yuxiu fixed her with a steady gaze. “A pleasant collaboration.”

Wen Ganan lowered her guard and drank the glass. After finishing, Liang Yuxiu poured her another, barely drinking himself.

They chatted for a while, and as Wen Ganan grew more at ease, her conversation opened up. She tapped her chest, a little coquettish and self-satisfied.

“So? President Liang, am I pretty impressive? I managed to land such a challenging project.”

Liang Yuxiu smiled but nodded. “You are quite impressive.”

Even he hadn’t expected them to secure the project.

Wen Ganan chuckled, pointing at him. “To be honest, at first I was worried you’d make things difficult for me, but it seems I was just being paranoid.”

Liang Yuxiu said, “Well, you were indeed a bit paranoid.”

“Because you’ve always disliked me, that’s why I thought that way.” Wen Ganan started to slur her words.

Hearing this, Liang Yuxiu looked puzzled. “What do you mean I dislike you?”

Wen Ganan lowered her eyes, considered for a moment, then waved it off indifferently. “Nothing. It’s all in the past.”

Suddenly, she felt her stomach churn, nausea rising swiftly.

Wen Ganan hurriedly covered her mouth, searching for the bathroom, and rushed inside, leaning over the toilet to vomit.

Liang Yuxiu’s expression changed as he followed her in, holding a cup of warm water. When she finished, he handed her tissues, helped her up, and offered the water.

“Rinse your mouth.”

Wen Ganan obediently rinsed, then drank several sips under Liang Yuxiu’s guidance before feeling somewhat better.

Her consciousness was still hazy, and she smiled foolishly at him. “Sorry, President Liang. What a joke.”

“...” Even now, she was still speaking formally. That scoundrel Wei Ming claimed to like her, yet how much had he exploited her over the years?

Liang Yuxiu took a breath and helped her out of the bathroom. “I’ll take you home.”

But no sooner had he spoken than Wen Ganan collapsed onto the living room couch, eyes closed, slipping into a deep sleep.

Liang Yuxiu was momentarily speechless, then silent for a while before retrieving a blanket to cover Wen Ganan.

He half-knelt before the sofa, watching her tightly shut eyes, briefly transported back to when they were still married—though then, it had been she who cared for his drunken self.

Just as he was lost in thought, Wen Ganan opened her eyes again and looked straight at him. Her gaze was blurred, and her serious tone carried an odd humor.

“I’ll do well, just watch.”

Then she closed her eyes once more.

Liang Yuxiu found it amusing. When had she become so competitive and strong-willed?

“Alright, I’ll watch.”

He replied, tucking the blanket around her. Suddenly recalling something, he leaned in and pinched her nose gently, whispering, “Why did you reject Wei Ming?”

Was it because of Cheng He, or something else?

His question was met only by Wen Ganan’s steady breathing and the ping of a message on her phone.

—

That night, Wen Ganan slept soundly, but awoke the next day with a throbbing headache.

She held her head and glanced around, recognizing the hotel room setting. It took her a moment to remember why she was there.

Nervously, she got up and found her clothes intact, relieved there was no embarrassing trace.

She put on her coat and stepped out; Liang Yuxiu had just arranged for breakfast to be delivered.

Seeing her awake, he was relatively mild. “You’re up.”

Wen Ganan knew nothing had happened the night before but still asked anxiously, “Sorry, President Liang. I hope I didn’t cause you too much trouble last night?”

Liang Yuxiu crossed his arms and smirked coldly. “You did cause quite a bit.”

Wen Ganan gasped inwardly, feeling guilty because she had blacked out and couldn’t recall what she’d done.

Under his chilly gaze, she listened as he said slowly, “You vomited all over my bathroom.”

Well, at least it was only the bathroom, she thought automatically.

Just as she was about to apologize, her phone rang. It was Chen Ling.

“Hello? Ganan, I heard that President Wei is planning to give the Quanten project to Manager Zhang?”

Chen Ling’s voice was anxious and angry.

Wen Ganan felt as if she had been struck by a thunderbolt, her hangover clearing instantly.

“When did this happen?”

“This morning. I was looking for Xiao Li from your client department, and he told me. Why don’t you ask President Wei yourself?”

“I understand.”

Wen Ganan hung up and looked at Liang Yuxiu. “Sorry, President Liang, I really didn’t mean for this. I have an urgent matter and must leave. If there’s any compensation needed, please contact me on WeChat.”

Without waiting for his response, she found her shoes in the living room, slipped them on, and hurried out, not forgetting to thank Liang Yuxiu for his hospitality the night before.

Liang Yuxiu watched her leave, his gaze deep and inscrutable.

Wen Ganan first returned home. It was Saturday, so Wen Shaoru and Tan Fang were off work. Although on the way back she noticed someone had sent a message from her phone to Tan Fang, saying she had stayed overnight at a colleague’s, she was still nervous and sneaky entering the house.

However, finding her parents absent—likely at the market—she relaxed and quickly fetched a change of clothes to shower.

After her bath, her parents still hadn’t returned, so Wen Ganan called Wei Ming to ask if he was at the company.

Wei Ming said, “My mother is still hospitalized. I’m at the city hospital taking care of her.”

Wen Ganan thought for a moment. “Then I’ll come by later to visit.”

Wei Ming made no objection.

Only then did Wen Ganan sit down and scroll through her WeChat messages. The previous night, Wei Ming had messaged her about discussing the Quanten project, but she had been too drunk to reply.

If Chen Ling’s information was accurate, Wei Ming’s so-called discussion was likely an attempt to transfer the project to Manager Zhang.

But on what grounds?

The more Wen Ganan thought about it, the angrier she became, itching to confront him at the hospital—but she knew she had to keep calm.

After a while, Wen Shaoru and Tan Fang returned.

Upon seeing Wen Ganan, they couldn’t help but scold her.

Wen Ganan was in low spirits and said nothing.

After dinner, she used the excuse of going out, bought a fruit basket at the hospital entrance, and then went upstairs.

Wei Ming had already sent her the ward number of his mother’s room, and Wen Ganan found it without difficulty.
