Wei Ming returned from the restroom to find that only Wen Ganan remained in the private room. Just as he was puzzled, he received a call from a friend informing him that the bid invitation documents from Quinten had already been sent to their company email by Liang Yuxiu. At the same time, Wen Ganan also received an email from Cheng He. Yet, Wei Ming maintained his stance, unwilling to pursue the project any further.

He sat down, attempting to persuade Wen Ganan otherwise. She remained firm, expressing her position clearly: “Alright, you’re the boss. If you insist, there’s nothing I can say.” Just as Wei Ming was about to relax, he heard Wen Ganan sigh and say, “I’m resigning.”

She understood that Wei Ming’s reluctance to fight for the project stemmed from his fear of reigniting old feelings between her and Liang Yuxiu. But regardless of the impossibility of that, she did not want him to act on impulse for her sake. They had made it clear long ago that there was no possibility between them, yet Wei Ming still refused to accept this fact.

If he continued like this—rejecting opportunities beneficial to the company because of personal emotions—Wen Ganan worried that if the company ever faltered, he would turn around and blame her. In that case, she had no choice but to resign.

Before leaving, Wen Ganan reminded him, “President Wei, you’ve been drinking. Remember to call a designated driver.” She departed, and Wei Ming watched her figure disappear, remaining silent for a long while.

Before sleep, as Wen Ganan lay in bed, she received a call from Wei Ming. She took the opportunity to ask if he had arrived home safely. After his reply, silence fell between them. Several seconds later, Wei Ming sighed deeply, “If you want to pursue the Quinten project, then go ahead.”

“I’m not threatening you tonight,” Wen Ganan explained.

Wei Ming smiled. “I know. I mean, whatever choice you make, I’m okay with it. I respect you.”

Wen Ganan was highly capable. Feidu was one of the top companies in Mian City, and its achievements over the years owed much to her. She was indeed Wei Ming’s right-hand woman. Professionally, Wei Ming always valued her opinions.

After a moment of silence, Wen Ganan made up her mind: “I understand.”

In truth, after tonight, she had already decided to resign. When she first joined, she had been frank with Wei Ming, and he had respected her. Wen Ganan had thought they were classmates, friends, and nothing more. But now, it was clearly not so.

Since there was no possibility, it was better not to give anyone false hope.

Wen Ganan resolved that if they could secure the Quinten project, she would complete it before resigning. If not, she might leave soon after. This was her plan, which she did not share with Wei Ming.

Tan Fang knocked and entered just as Wen Ganan ended the call. “Was that Wei Ming?” she asked.

Wen Ganan replied vaguely. Tan Fang sighed regretfully, “That guy’s not bad, but his family background isn’t great. Otherwise, he’d be quite suitable for you.”

Wen Shaoru and Tan Fang had always been clear about Wen Ganan’s standards for choosing a partner: no social climbing, but no marrying down either. Ideally, they should be well-matched.

Wei Ming wasn’t a bad choice. Though from a rural background, he had worked hard to get into Yanda University, started his own business there, and even relocated his company to Mian City for Wen Ganan. His success was a model of self-made achievement.

The only downside was his unsociable rural parents who, relying on their son’s rising career, were overly picky about Wen Ganan.

Tan Fang shuddered to think of how much trouble Wen Ganan would face if she ended up with Wei Ming. From then on, she completely abandoned the idea of matchmaking between them.

“Enough about that. Did Xiao Cheng come to talk to you today?” Tan Fang’s tone shifted rapidly, bubbling with excitement, as if Wen Ganan and Cheng He were already a couple.

Wen Ganan sighed helplessly, “He did.”

Sending her the bid invitation email counted as chatting, right? Fortunately, Tan Fang didn’t press further. She left with a grin from ear to ear, reminding Wen Ganan to finish her warm milk before going to bed.

Wen Ganan thought she should find time to talk with Cheng He, but her current priority was to prepare the bid documents well.

In the following days, Wen Ganan did not see Wei Ming. His secretary said his mother had fallen ill, and he had rushed back to his rural hometown that very night.

However, he did issue a letter of appointment, instructing the planning department to cooperate with Wen Ganan on the bid documents.

As for Liang Yuxiu, Wen Ganan hadn’t seen him since that night. She guessed he had already left Mian City.

But at nine o’clock that Friday night, just as Wen Ganan finished working late and was being urged home with some late-night snacks, she received a call from an unfamiliar number. The number seemed vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t place it immediately.

When she answered, there was no sound. Just as she thought it might be a prank, Liang Yuxiu’s voice came through.

“Wen Ganan, I’m lost.”

His speech was slurred, clearly drunk.

Wen Ganan was stunned, both shocked that he was still in Mian City and incredulous that he would call her in such a state.

She forced herself to stay calm and gathered her words: “Is no one with you?”

Who would have thought this aloof and noble “highland flower” Liang Yuxiu suffered from congenital directionlessness?

Liang Yuxiu said, “The driver can’t find me.”

Wen Ganan was at a loss for words.

Emotionally, whatever happened to Liang Yuxiu was no longer her concern. But rationally, as Quinten’s Asia-Pacific director and chief engineer, he might still be a future client for Feidu.

If something went wrong in Mian City, it would only harm the project.

More importantly, this was a chance to improve goodwill.

Wen Ganan weighed the pros and cons and quickly made a decision.

“Where are you? Are there any landmarks or buildings nearby?” She put on her coat and, phone propped on her shoulder, stepped outside.

Liang Yuxiu seemed to ponder for a moment: “There’s a pillar, a very big pillar.”

Just as she entered the elevator, Wen Ganan muttered, “...”

“Open WeChat and turn on location sharing.”

Liang Yuxiu responded with a grunt.

Half an hour later, Wen Ganan found Liang Yuxiu in the underground parking lot on the second basement level of a suburban building. He was leaning against the large pillar he mentioned, his consciousness hazy.

Wen Ganan approached, “President Liang.”

His eyes opened, the usual cold sharpness replaced by a misty glaze.

“Wen Ganan.”

Her heart felt like it had been struck hard. Avoiding his gaze, she asked for his phone.

“I’ll contact your driver.”

When she called, the driver was nearly frantic. Liang Yuxiu had drunk and sent him to buy yogurt. After returning, the driver couldn’t find him and couldn’t reach him by phone.

After some communication, they confirmed Liang Yuxiu was in the underground parking of the adjacent building. The driver was on his way.

Seeing Wen Ganan, the driver inquired about her identity.

Without hesitation, she said, “Client.”

The driver understood immediately.

As they helped Liang Yuxiu into the car, he suddenly raised his hand. His fingertips brushed lightly past her ear and finally rested on her shoulder.

“Thank you.”

Wen Ganan stiffened instantly.

Luckily, she snapped out of it quickly, pulled his hand away, and acted as if nothing had happened. After giving the driver a few instructions, she hurriedly turned and left.
