Chapter 60: The Drawing in Progress

Five hundred dollars for one magic box, and Luke bought a hundred of them.

He wanted to buy more, but the display showed they were sold out.

Damn it!

“Only ten ten-draws in total. That’s even less than last time,” Luke complained, glaring at Lotus with a look full of resentment.

“Last time was a promotion. Trust me, I’m guiding you down the right path. Ho ho!” Lotus put on an air of unshakable confidence, stubbornly insisting that the rules were already set.

“Like hell I believe you!” Luke rolled his eyes at it.

In a flash of light, a hundred magic boxes appeared neatly stacked in front of him, conjured from thin air.

“I’m going to start drawing! Let’s see what I get from these mere ten guaranteed rewards.” Luke bowed three times toward the east and said, “Great Ma, grant me strength!!”

He thought to himself, now was the moment to test his luck.

Question: What can you get from a hundred magic boxes?

Answer: Usually, the outcome depends on the bloodline of the person opening the boxes, and there are three main types.

For example:

A true prodigy always gets what they want in a single draw.

Even if they click the wrong item by accident, they’ll open a full set of invisible sky gear. Whatever’s needed for the event, they get it effortlessly.

The perpetually unlucky never get a single decent thing, and misfortune follows them everywhere.

No flashes after a full grind, two-thirds fewer demon stones than others when farming, always getting 413 in raids, buying instant noodles only to find no seasoning packet, ten ten-draws yield ten pet eggs, and the rest are nearly all random artifact soul packs with 2~10 pieces each, which always end up being the two-piece packs!

It makes you wonder if you’re even playing the right game.

Year-round, you live in fear, ruled by the soul of misfortune...

As for the rest, they’re just pseudo-lucky.

Their luck comes and goes, and their heads are filled with superstitions and rituals all day.

Honestly, Luke seemed more like the third type.

“Speaking of which—if I drink one of Seria’s Lucky Potions while drawing boxes, will my luck double?” Rubbing his hands, Luke fantasized about boosting his luck with a little ritual.

Lotus promptly doused his hopes: “Don’t bother, that stuff doesn’t work on magic boxes!”

Luke shot it an annoyed look. “Another one of your rules?”

“That one’s not on me. It’s a system rule. Do you think the system would leave such a big loophole for you?” Lotus snorted. “You should know, this is Second Sister’s... ahem, anyway... just give up on that.”

Luke sighed. “I knew it, nothing good ever comes so easily. Second Sister? Who’s that?”

“Nothing,” Lotus feigned ignorance.

Luke eyed Lotus suspiciously, certain it was hiding something from him.

Based on his ample experience with these magic boxes, Luke estimated that the chance of getting a skill book as a guaranteed reward was about two-thirds.

He expected to get six or seven skill books this time.

With such a small sample, the odds of getting the exact mecha weapon blueprint he wanted were already slim.

The remaining third would yield oddities like the Bonina Burger Recipe, Seria’s Lucky Potion, or Snowman Costumes—strange rewards.

Not to say those were useless; sometimes they were even great. But right now, what he wanted most was to boost his combat power.

Was he supposed to don a snowman suit and sell burgers on the street, hoping his enemies would die from cuteness?

First ten-draw result:

[Data Chip x1]

[Seria’s Homemade Cake x1]

[Colorless Shard x33]

[Resurrection Coin x2]

[Demon Stone x2]

[Demon Stone x1]

[Colorless Shard x18]

[Data Chip x1]

[Colorless Shard x17]

[Bonina’s Delicious Burger Recipe: Volume Two]

Luke looked surprised. Speak of the devil.

“Huh! There’s even a second volume of this thing?” He picked it up and read the description: “Teaches you how to make even more delicious burgers... If there’s a second volume, is there a third?”

“You’re so clever,” Lotus replied.

“And the third volume teaches you how to make even even more delicious burgers?”

“You’re a genius!”

“...”

Luke flipped through the recipe listlessly, discovering it truly was new content—about making advanced Bonina Burgers to win over pickier customers.

The problem was, was he supposed to conquer Thanos with burgers?

Never mind, on to the next.

Second ten-draw result:

[Demon Stone x1]

[Demon Stone x2]

[Demon Stone x3]

[Colorless Shard x10]

[Resurrection Coin x1]

[Resurrection Coin x2]

...

The guaranteed reward turned out to be a skill book.

[Skill Book: Uppercut]

Luke felt the deep malice of the universe...

There it was!

The soul of misfortune!!

Luke calmly began the third ten-draw. He was used to it by now...

[Demon Stone x1]

[Demon Stone x2]

[Demon Stone x3]

...

[Skill Book: Iron Body]

...

“Another Iron Body?” he muttered.

Though it was a rare defensive skill, Luke was still a little disappointed.

He patted the book and learned the skill.

With two levels of Iron Body stacked, his immunity to pain grew even greater.

“Not bad,” Luke mused.

He imagined that if he kept stacking more levels of Iron Body, he would eventually feel nothing at all.

He might as well become a vegetable.

Worse still, when he grew up and wanted to do certain things, he might not feel anything at all...

Lotus: “Now that you mention it, that might actually be a god-tier skill.”

Luke: “If there’s anyone I’m convinced by, it’s you!”

Fourth ten-draw:

[Demon Stone x1]

[Demon Stone x2]

[Demon Stone x3]

...

Looking at the growing pile of demon stones, Luke was speechless. No matter how good demon stones were, this was just too much...

The guaranteed reward was an Asura skill book.

“At last, a useful skill!” Luke let out a sigh of relief. At least he wasn’t going completely empty-handed this time.

[Skill Book: Asura Evil Light Slash]

Harnessing the power of Wave Imprint, swing a sword to fire a massive blade of light forward.

This was the first Asura skill Luke had ever drawn. In DNF, after awakening, Asura was known as the Dark Heavenly Emperor, famed for trading a set of +12 gear for a stainless steel basin.

He patted the book and learned it. Instantly, a strange energy surged inside him. He figured this must be the power of the Wave Imprint.

Like the Draw Slash, this move also required a sword.

What Luke valued most was that this move was a ranged attack.

It seemed to be his first true long-range offensive ability so far. Hand grenades counted only as mid-range.

Until now, he’d relied mainly on close combat, brawling with enemies face to face. Even after donning his mecha, he developed mecha martial arts, continuing to fight in close quarters.

Now, at last, he had a reason not to brawl up close all the time—

Provided he had a sword.

Luke glanced thoughtfully at the special container holding the liquid Adamantium alloy beside him, but didn’t make a decision yet. Instead, he moved on to the fifth ten-draw.

“No rush, let’s see what else I get,” Luke thought.

[Demon Stone x1]

[Demon Stone x2]

[Demon Stone x3]

...

When the guaranteed reward appeared, Luke was stunned.

Another skill book.

“Wait, this skill—isn’t this the one from the Priest...”
