Chapter 33: Pursuit
Song Mi was once again taken by surprise. She had assumed that Pei Qiuyang was just a privileged young man, but to her astonishment, he actually ran a legitimate security company.
Before Pei Qiuyang’s gaze could settle back on her face, Song Mi lowered her eyes, sweeping away the traces of emotion that had flickered there moments before. “Perhaps, President Pei, you should submit a merger application and join Sihai Group’s Security Department?”
Her long lashes fluttered, and her beautiful fox-like eyes gleamed with a sharpness that seemed to pierce straight through to the heart.
“Mimi…” The pressure was palpable; Pei Qiuyang’s voice dropped a few tones, yet he was unwilling to retreat so easily. “That’s not what I meant. The more people protecting you, the safer you’ll be!”
“Besides, I’ve had professional training. If I personally guard you, twenty-four hours a day, always at your service—I guarantee not even a fly could get near you!”
“Oh, please!” Across from Song Mi, Qiao Weiwei scoffed dismissively. “Twenty-four hours at your beck and call? Isn’t this just an excuse to pursue Mimi under the guise of being her bodyguard?”
“Mimi, don’t listen to him…”
Now Pei Qiuyang was getting fired up. “Hey, Qiao Weiwei, what have I ever done to upset you? So what if I want to pursue Mimi?”
“I like her just the way she is. I fell for her at first sight. What’s wrong with wanting to court her?” As he spoke, his enthusiasm grew, something seemed stuck in his chest, and he just had to let it out. “With your attitude, you probably haven’t been pursued by a man in your whole life!”
“Isn’t this a case of sour grapes?”
“Pei Qiuyang, you—”
“Qiao Weiwei, I’m warning you, three times is the limit. You’ve already snapped at me twice today…”
“Attorney Wen, please carry me out.” Amid the tense clamor, Song Mi’s voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through like a blade. “Leave the room to them, let them argue to their hearts’ content and see who comes out on top.”
Pei Qiuyang quickly bit back his words. “…Mimi!”
Qiao Weiwei’s eyes widened in fury, as if she wished she could carve two holes right into Pei Qiuyang, but her words were directed at Song Mi. “If I win, will you let me move into your place?”
To everyone’s surprise, Attorney Wen, who had barely made his presence known since entering, was astonishingly compliant this time.
He moved swiftly!
Before Qiao Weiwei had finished speaking, he strode toward the hospital bed with his long legs. “Good idea.”
Seeing him actually lean down to pick her up, Song Mi was momentarily startled, but she cooperated, placing her hand on his shoulder.
Wen Yanli, oblivious to the others, lifted her from the bed.
He’d been carrying her every day these past few days, and each time, the sensation was the same—weightless.
She was nearly one meter seventy, with all the curves where they should be, yet in his arms she felt as light as a feather.
“Hey, Mimi, uh…” Seeing the situation unfold, Pei Qiuyang grew anxious. “…Yanli, where are you taking Mimi?”
Watching them about to leave, Qiao Weiwei was also stunned. “Mimi, are you just abandoning me? Where are you off to?”
Song Mi simply closed her eyes, pressing her face against the man’s chest. “To another room—to sleep.”
It wasn’t just an excuse; she was truly exhausted.
After Assistant Lin had finished his morning report and left, she’d barely lain down before the knocking started again; naturally, it was Lin once more.
Executives from the mother company of Junyue Hotel wanted to speak with her personally about compensation.
No sooner had the phone call ended than her other phone rang—Qiao Weiwei informing her she’d arrived at the hospital entrance.
So, the sleep she’d intended to catch up on never happened—not for a single minute.
She was severely sleep-deprived, and on top of that, after a sudden high fever and then a car accident, she was also now in early pregnancy, truly worn out both body and mind.
Strangely, in the warmth and solidity of the man’s embrace, she felt especially relaxed, with no desire at all to force open her eyes.
Wen Yanli carried her straight to the room at the end of the corridor. It was noticeably less spacious and bright than the previous one, but the key was its quietness.
Once inside, he gently placed her on the hospital bed, unable to suppress a soft question, “What happened last night?”
