Su Ming reached the entrance, where he saw a large number of law-enforcement officers rushing inside. Their first priority was rescuing the civilians trapped within, carrying the injured out through the passageway and bringing them to safety. Meanwhile, numerous special-forces soldiers had arrived on the rooftop by helicopter. A massive police presence had completely surrounded the Golden Palace, forming an impenetrable cordon.

Su Ming stood on the steps. He had just removed his mask, lit a cigarette, and taken a deep drag when Ye Bing, having learned that something terrible had happened at the Golden Palace, arrived at the scene in a desperate rush.

She stood at the entrance of the passageway, peering anxiously inside. Her heart was racing like an ant on a hot griddle, consumed with worry for her best friend, Lin Ruoxue.

“Why hasn’t she come out yet?”

She had nearly snapped the heels off her shoes from pacing. Ye Bing clasped her hands together, shut her eyes, and prayed devoutly.

At that moment, she finally saw Lin Ruoxue and Lin Zhentian emerge under the protection of numerous special-forces soldiers.

Ye Bing greeted Lin Ruoxue with delighted relief and immediately threw her arms around her.

“Thank goodness! You’re finally out. You scared me to death!”

Feeling the concern of her dearest friend, Lin Ruoxue reached out and patted Ye Bing on the shoulder, soothing her.

“I’m fine. Just think of it as a nightmare. Once we wake up tomorrow, it’ll all be over.”

The two women then walked toward an armored vehicle.

After they had taken their seats, Lin Ruoxue and Ye Bing chatted for a few moments. Just as the vehicle started, Ye Bing suddenly frowned and looked outside.

Beneath a streetlamp in the distance, a familiar figure was slowly walking away.

“That looks so familiar. He almost looks like that ex-convict!”

Ye Bing murmured this after watching the figure disappear into the distance.

“What are you looking at?”

Seeing Ye Bing continue to stare outside, Lin Ruoxue asked her.

“Nothing. I thought I saw someone I knew.”

“By the way, you said earlier that a masked man rescued you?”

“Really? The way you describe it sounds like something out of a novel—the hero rescuing the beauty.”

Ye Bing turned back and spoke with great curiosity.

“Yes. When I was at my most desperate, he appeared like a ray of light.”

“If he hadn’t shown up, I would probably have been taken away by now. Thinking about it still sends a shiver down my spine.”

“Unfortunately, I don’t even know his name.”

As she said this, Lin Ruoxue lowered her head slightly. For the first time in her life, she found herself questioning her appearance and personal charm.

“Oh my God, Ruoxue! Don’t tell me you fell in love with that masked man at first sight!”

“Oh my God, oh my God! The number-one goddess of Longzhou is actually about to fall in love?”

Ye Bing exclaimed dramatically. She had only meant it as a joke to lighten the mood, hoping to keep Lin Ruoxue from sinking further into the trauma of what had happened.

But she never expected Lin Ruoxue to raise her head with a troubled expression and offer no denial. Instead, she let out one sigh after another.

Ye Bing was instantly stunned.

It was utterly unbelievable.

Women understood women best, and after more than a decade as sisters, Ye Bing seemed to realize that Lin Ruoxue had truly developed feelings for him.

It was utterly shocking.

Elsewhere, in an upscale residential community in Longxi Bay, inside a luxurious villa, Chen Liang stared at the dozen or so urns before him, his face dark and grim.

Seven or eight heavily built bodyguards stood before him, all trembling with their heads lowered. None of them dared even breathe too loudly.

“You useless pieces of trash! Every last one of you is worthless!”

“You couldn’t even handle such a simple matter. He was nothing but an ex-convict, yet you couldn’t bring him down. Instead, you were all slaughtered!”

“This has already made the news. If the family finds out, how will I ever be able to hold my head up in the Chen family?”

With that, Chen Liang overturned the tea table, smashing it to pieces. He then kicked the urns across the floor. White ashes spilled everywhere, causing the bodyguards to shrink back in terror.

“Young Master, we never expected that man to be so powerful,” one of them stammered.

“We originally intended to send the Black Warrior, but using him against an ex-convict would have been overkill.”

A bald man forced himself to explain.

“However, we’ve already sent the Blade Demon to capture him. He should be brought before you tonight.”

The bald man spoke with trembling caution.

“All right. I understand.”

“What about the Lin family? Don’t tell me that failed as well!”

“It took great effort to invite two duke-level assassins from the Dark Church!”

Chen Liang drew a deep breath. Nothing had been going his way lately. Once he dealt with the Lin family, he would have to find some time to relax properly.

“Young Master... about the Lin family...”

The bald man faltered, unable to continue. The others immediately dropped to their knees.

Chen Liang sensed that something was wrong. His expression changed at once, becoming so dark and ominous that it seemed water might drip from it.

“What happened? Tell me!”

His voice was hoarse, his fury savage as a beast.

The bald man trembled as he spoke.

“The Shadow Demon Warrior and Miss Black Widow are both dead!”

“Moreover, the Black Warrior Legion we sent out was brutally slaughtered. Every last one of them perished!”

“According to our investigation, it was the work of a mysterious masked man.”

After finishing, the bald man cautiously watched Chen Liang’s reaction.

“A mysterious man?”

“Even Black Widow is dead. What kind of person is opposing me?”

Chen Liang was deeply shaken.

The Black Widow and the Shadow Demon Warrior were both legendary duke-level assassins. Black Widow in particular had once struck terror into the hearts of countless people. She had been the commander of a demonic legion that had given the great duchies endless headaches.

And now, even she was dead.

Just how terrifying must the person who killed them be?

Chen Liang had already forgotten the frustration of the failed mission. What he felt now was fear—a fear that came from the very depths of his bones.

Meanwhile, Su Ming had just returned to the entrance of the hotel when a figure appeared before him and blocked his path.

The man was tall and broad-shouldered, dressed in black, with a hat pulled low over his face. His features were impossible to make out. In his hand, however, he carried a massive blade, and beneath the streetlights he looked like a vengeful ghost. One glance at him was enough to make anyone’s flesh crawl.

“You’re blocking my way?”

Su Ming narrowed his eyes slightly and spoke coldly.

“You’ve managed to kill so many people. You’re no ordinary man.”

“I’ll give you a dignified choice. Come with me. I don’t want to fight you.”

“Come with me to meet the young master. Perhaps if you manage to win his favor, you may be allowed to live. You might even become his dog. That would be your honor.”

The man’s voice was hoarse, as though it had been torn apart through a broken loudspeaker. Even from more than thirty feet away, Su Ming found it grating.

“The young master?”

At those words, a dark look instantly appeared in Su Ming’s eyes. There was no need to guess. This had to be someone from the Chen family.

He had originally intended to attack and kill the man before him. But he quickly suppressed the murderous impulse in his heart.

Since the other side had delivered themselves to his doorstep, why not take advantage of the opportunity?

“I’ll go with you.”

Su Ming suddenly changed his mind, nodded, and replied.
