Chapter 92: They Truly Go to Great Lengths to Promote Their Disciple!
In the courtyard.
Chu Chongfeng paced back and forth, his face clouded with gloom. Having been insulted by a mere greenhorn made his anger boil over. If not for the fact that this was not the place to create a scene, he would have gladly silenced Qin Chuan with a poisonous hand. What stung him even more was being thrown out by Mo Qingqiu. If it hadn’t been for his own needlework stabilizing the Dragon King’s condition, the cold poison would have invaded the heart’s meridians and claimed the Dragon King’s life long ago.
“How skilled can a callow youth be in medicine, even if he’d studied since the womb for over twenty years?” The more Chu Chongfeng dwelled on it, the more disgruntled he became. He had already started picturing the scene where Qin Chuan failed in treatment, and members of the Dragon Fang Special Forces would come begging him to save the day.
He had not finished indulging this fantasy when a fully armed young man strode quickly towards him.
“Hmph! As expected, here they come!”
A cold sneer played at Chu Chongfeng’s lips as he straightened his back, preparing to put on an air of feigned anger and superiority.
But the words that followed nearly caused him to stumble and fall.
“Elder Chu, the Dragon King requests your presence!”
It took a full thirty seconds for Chu Chongfeng to regain his composure, still incredulous as he asked, “The Dragon King is awake? How could he possibly—” He cut himself off mid-sentence, for he clearly sensed the chilling aura of killing intent emanating from the young guard before him.
“What’s wrong, Elder Chu? Would you have preferred the Dragon King not awaken?”
The guard’s expression was frosted with coldness, his tone glacial.
Chu Chongfeng shivered uncontrollably and hastily waved his hands in protest. “That’s not what I meant—I was merely... surprised. Who could possess such extraordinary medical skill as to draw out the cold poison?”
“You’ll see for yourself, Elder Chu.” Without another word, the guard turned and walked away, his attitude noticeably colder than before.
Chu Chongfeng was left bewildered, scarcely aware of how he ended up inside the Dragon King’s chamber.
It was only when he felt the peculiar gazes coming from all directions that he snapped out of his daze, realizing the room was already filled with people. Among them were his old rivals, Li Youshan and Hu Derun, as well as that wretched youth, Qin Chuan, whom he’d sooner skin than tolerate.
“Could it have been them who revived the Dragon King?”
The thought alone startled Chu Chongfeng.
“No, impossible—absolutely impossible.” He knew all too well the limits of Li Youshan and Hu Derun. They couldn’t even stabilize the Dragon King’s injuries, let alone extract the cold poison that had seeped into the bone marrow. As the saying goes, a master’s prowess determines the apprentice’s skill; if the teachers were so lacking, how high could Qin Chuan’s abilities possibly reach?
“It seems my accidental use of acupuncture from that ancient medical text was what turned the tide.”
“That must be it!”
Imagining the glory he would soon bask in before these renowned physicians, Chu Chongfeng’s lips curled into a slight smile and his chest swelled with pride.
At that moment, Long Qianqiu’s robust voice resonated through the room.
“My thanks to all of you who have journeyed far to treat my injuries. No matter how great or small your contribution, I will see you amply rewarded.”
The faces of a dozen medical luminaries broke into smiles, even as they modestly protested that they hardly deserved such praise.
With a gesture, Long Qianqiu quieted the room.
“First, I must thank Elder Chu for stabilizing my condition. Without his intervention, I fear I would have long since departed for the underworld.”
At these words, all eyes turned toward Chu Chongfeng—some with admiration, some with envy, and some with barely concealed jealousy.
Chu Chongfeng’s smile broadened, his entire being seeming to float with satisfaction. His narrow eyes gleamed with a sense of vindication. When he looked at Li Youshan and Hu Derun, his gaze was full of disdain and scorn, as if to say: What do you two nobodies have to compare with me?
But before this feeling could fully settle, Long Qianqiu’s tone shifted.
“Yet the ones I am most indebted to are Doctors Li and Hu. Without their miraculous hands, even had my injuries been stabilized, the cold poison would have seeped into my bones and I would not have survived three days.”
It was as if a stone had been dropped into a placid lake—the room erupted. The look of triumph on Chu Chongfeng’s face froze into disbelief.
“It was really Old Li and Old Hu who cured the Dragon King?”
“How could that be? They were helpless before—how did they suddenly succeed?”
“Is it possible they’re so detached from fame and gain that they let us have a chance, only for us to fail miserably? That would be a bitter pill to swallow!”
Li Youshan and Hu Derun themselves were utterly bewildered.
“Just disinfecting the needles counts as a miracle cure?”
“Just assisting Mr. Qin earns us the highest credit?”
These were the burning questions in their minds.
In truth, Li Youshan and Hu Derun already knew that Qin Chuan intended to share the credit, or they wouldn’t have agreed to assist. But neither of them had ever sought to steal the limelight or undue merit.
“Dragon King, all credit for your recovery belongs to Mr. Qin,” Li Youshan quickly clarified.
“Indeed, Dragon King, we were but humble assistants,” Hu Derun added.
At this, everyone turned their eyes to Qin Chuan, soon noticing the look of confusion on his face, quickly replaced by delight and excitement.
Witnessing this, the crowd suddenly understood.
“Old Li, Old Hu, even if you want to promote your apprentice, isn’t this a bit much?”
“You two old foxes are truly cunning!”
“No wonder you pretended helplessness at first—so it was all to set the stage for your disciple.”
Li Youshan and Hu Derun’s faces twitched uncontrollably. In times like these, telling the truth was destined to fall on deaf ears.
“Mr. Qin, won’t you say something?” Li Youshan pleaded, his face full of distress. Though Hu Derun said nothing, his urgent expression made his feelings plain.
Under their shocked and confused gazes, Qin Chuan let out a soft sigh and, with an apologetic look, said, “I appreciate the kindness of my seniors, but if I were to claim such undeserved credit, I’d be ashamed for life. I am still young, and I believe that through diligent study, I will one day make my mark through true skill. I hope you will allow me that chance.”
Upon hearing this confession, everyone present wore expressions of sudden realization.
Li Youshan and Hu Derun were briefly taken aback, but they caught the deeper meaning in Qin Chuan’s words.
“It seems Mr. Qin wishes to remain low-key; otherwise, he wouldn’t have asked for our understanding.”
With this in mind, Li Youshan promptly said, “Dragon King, it was selfishness on mine and Old Hu’s part. We beg forgiveness.”
Long Qianqiu laughed heartily. “You two have saved my life—what is there to forgive? A little selfishness is only human. Just see that it doesn't happen again.”
“Thank you, Dragon King, for your magnanimity!” Li Youshan and Hu Derun both clasped their fists in gratitude.
Long Qianqiu waved them off and then bestowed rewards upon all the great physicians present.
With everything settled, Qin Chuan prepared to return to the Lan family. The day’s exhaustion weighed heavily upon him.
What he did not know was that, as he made his way back, someone already harbored a growing hatred for him.
