Chapter Ninety-Five: The Class Reunion, Part Two
Some people are inexplicably detestable, while others are just as inexplicably likable.
Take Yang Fan and Liang He, for instance. Liang He could hardly be called anything but excellent: handsome, wealthy, and popular, the sort of man every girl would notice. By all accounts, at least from what Wang Yun knew, he was a considerate and tenderhearted man.
And yet she simply felt nothing.
Perhaps this was what people meant by meeting at the right time but never being destined for one another.
Wang Yun spoke with the same heedless frankness as ever, and Liang He was left standing there awkwardly.
“Hearing you say that, I was only treating you like a younger sister. An older brother calling his little sister by a nickname is perfectly normal, isn’t it?” Liang He tried to smooth over his embarrassment.
“Chairman Liang, you only remember Wang Yun and forget the rest of us!” An Lan said from the side.
“How could I forget you?” Liang He smiled.
“Then, Chairman, come sit over here. Wang Yun already has someone beside her.”
“Someone?” Liang He startled.
“Didn’t you notice she’s even wearing a wedding ring?”
Xiao Yu’s voice was loud enough for everyone to hear, and the whole room could not help turning to look at Wang Yun. A campus beauty, gone from school for only half a year, and already married?
Liang He was even more shaken. He had pursued her for years, only to discover that in the end she would not even spare him a glance.
He did not know that Wang Yun was not trying to seem untouchably distant; she had simply never intended to look for a boyfriend in the first place.
“You’re really married?” Liang He asked, unable to quite believe it.
“Yes. I really am married. So, I’m sorry.” Wang Yun said it as if that were all the explanation he was owed.
“You say that as though there’s anything to apologize for. Aren’t you still my little sister?” Liang He’s face remained unchanged, though the resentment in his heart was already surging toward the surface.
“I came today to make things clear. I really am married, so you don’t need to keep calling me so often anymore.”
“You’re just overthinking it. So what if we can’t be lovers? Can’t we still be friends? And if even that’s impossible, aren’t we still classmates?” Beneath Liang He’s calm expression lurked a devil gnawing its teeth. At the end of this obsession, perhaps he would truly become a demon.
Today, either I’ll make you disgraced beyond repair, or I’ll make you come begging to me. Otherwise, all these years I’ve spent on you will have been for nothing.
Wang Yun had nothing left to say.
But now that everything had been made clear, there would be nothing more to say in the future either.
Nothing had ever begun, so how could one speak of who had wronged whom? And she had long since told Liang He not to waste his time on her.
In truth, everyone could see Liang He’s disappointment. They were all just spectators eager for gossip; if she hadn’t married, they might still have tried to persuade him. But now that she was married, how could anyone urge her to divorce?
“Where is your husband? Why don’t you introduce him to us?” Liang He looked around, but there was no sign of him.
“He’s the one who went out to make a phone call just now. You passed him at the door when you came in,” Wang Yun said after taking a sip of water.
Liang He’s thoughts raced. Was that the man who had met his gaze for a few seconds?
And just like that, even Yang Fan became someone he hated.
In this world, money can make the devil turn the millstone. If I can’t make the two of you come begging to me today, then I don’t deserve to be called a rich second-generation heir.
“So, Chairman, why don’t you come sit over here? If we wait until your husband comes back and sees this seat taken, he might go home with you tonight and start a fight.”
“Yes, yes, I really should sit over there!” Liang He stood up at once and moved over.
Wang Yun calmly sipped her tea.
“Chairman, didn’t you say this class reunion would only have a dozen of us?” Xiao Yu asked.
“No. The others will be here soon. The company happened to organize a trip to the newly opened Fanmei Resort today for some relaxation, and they all went. I didn’t.”
“Everyone works for your company?”
“They’re classmates. If I can help, then I help,” Liang He said with a smile. He loved this kind of glory. The feeling of wealth was intoxicatingly satisfying.
“Can I go too?”
“Of course you can. Everyone’s going. But as for Wang Yun’s special police husband, there’s no need for him to come. He probably doesn’t make much in a month anyway. Can your husband even support you?” Liang He smoothly steered the conversation back to Wang Yun.
“Right, Wang Yun, what exactly does your husband do?” An Lan and the others were also curious. They had been too embarrassed to ask in front of Yang Fan just now.
“He? He’s unemployed.”
“That won’t do. How could you marry so hastily?”
“Why don’t you let him come work for my company? I’ve had some business dealings with Fanmei Resort lately, and I’m just short of someone to run errands,” Liang He said with an air of superiority. “What kind of man did you even marry? It’s like a beautiful flower stuck in cow dung.”
“Forget it. He’s hard to manage, and I’m afraid he’d only cause you trouble,” Wang Yun replied with a smile, refusing him.
In truth, the so-called business Liang He spoke of had been brought to him by A Jiu, only because A Jiu and he were classmates.
In Tianhai, A Jiu, Scar Five, and the others treated Wang Yun with extraordinary respect, constantly trying in every possible way to curry favor with her.
Who told them that Wang Yun was Yang Fan’s woman? In Tianhai, that made her one of a kind.
“What’s so hard to manage about that? You can’t expect to be the only one supporting the household,” Liang He said.
Wang Yun only smiled and said nothing.
“Wang Yun, your husband has been outside making that phone call for so long. Why still not come in?”
“It’s fine. It’s his first time in Tianhai, so he’s probably still wandering around.”
The group chatted idly while Liang He narrowed his eyes. He ran through his plan once more. A special police officer, plus an unemployed man—how much money could they possibly have saved in half a year?
Just as he was thinking about it, he saw Yang Fan returning in high spirits.
“Is Wang Yun’s husband that one?” Liang He asked softly.
“Yes, that’s him. His name is Yang Fan,” Xiao Yu answered.
At that moment, nearly everyone’s gaze settled on Yang Fan.
Yang Fan paused for a moment. Hadn’t he just secured a business deal?
He went straight to sit beside Wang Yun.
“Why are you so happy?” she asked.
“Guess.”
“Hey, stop showing off your affection, you two!” Xiao Yu said, unable to help herself.
And Liang He’s expression instantly turned cold, because Wang Yun had never smiled at him like that.
Of course Yang Fan noticed too. Their eyes met once again.
“Why are you all staring at us?” Yang Fan asked, unable to hold back.
“We’re blessing you. You married the campus beauty of Tianhai University!”
The room suddenly fell silent. No one knew what the others were thinking, but to Yang Fan, this class reunion had to be the least interesting thing in the world.
It was not until more than ten minutes later that another two or three dozen people came through the door.
The whole room was stirred again, because they really had not seen one another for more than half a year, and the dishes were finally being served. Yang Fan was simply there to eat for free. Though he had had a little food two hours earlier, this meal was free; if he didn’t eat it, it would go to waste.
“Honey, I’m going to the restroom,” Wang Yun said, standing up.
“Wang Yun, I’ll go with you!” Xiao Yu followed right after.
Yang Fan curled his lip. Women really were like that—going to the restroom always had to be a group activity.
And at the table, there were truly only Yang Fan, An Lan, and Liang He left.
Liang He knew his chance had come.
“Yang Fan, tell me—how exactly did you manage to marry our Wang Yun?” An Lan leaned over and asked.
“Well, it wasn’t really me, it was her—”
Before Yang Fan could finish, a sharp crash came from beside him, followed by a scream.
“You... you stole Young Master Liang’s designer watch?”
