Chapter Fifty-Nine: The Disaster Brought by Greed (Second Update)
Wu Kangping was taken aback; he hadn’t expected Qin Tian to speak to him with such audacity and confidence.
His clothes had been dirtied—how could the culprit act so arrogant?
“Tell me where the clothes came from, and I’ll let the matter of you dirtying my clothes slide,” Wu Kangping said again.
“You’re not qualified to know! But I’ll say this: we didn’t get your clothes dirty! And as for your clothes, the workmanship is rubbish!” Qin Tian replied, pointing at the surveillance cameras, signaling that they could check the footage to see if they had touched the clothes.
The woman in the cheongsam panicked. If they checked the surveillance footage, wouldn’t everything be exposed?
“Ow, my stomach hurts. I need to use the restroom,” she blurted out, hastily hanging the clothes back on the rack before darting to the back of the shop.
“Fine, let’s check the cameras! I’ll make you give up!” Wu Kangping was determined to uncover where the clothes on Wade Griffin had come from today—he desperately wanted to get his hands on that garment.
It was simply perfect! He could learn so much just from studying it!
But when they checked the surveillance footage, they were dumbfounded: the recordings for that time period were gone.
“Haha! Even the cameras aren’t on your side! Look!” the woman in the cheongsam laughed from the back.
“Now that the footage is gone, I can only assume you’re the ones who dirtied the clothes,” Wu Kangping declared.
The woman in the cheongsam let out a quiet sigh of relief, patting her chest. Thankfully, she’d had the foresight to use the restroom as an excuse and slipped away to delete the recordings!
“How does that make any sense? Just because there’s no footage, you’re blaming us? We never even touched those clothes!” Shen Xiaoqing protested angrily.
“Exactly! You’re being completely unreasonable!” Jiang Yingying chimed in.
“Forget it, it’s just a bit of money. Let’s say it was us—I’ll pay you,” Wade Griffin said, thoroughly fed up with Wu Kangping. Fifty thousand meant little to him; he’d rather spend the money to avoid this nuisance.
“No! We didn’t do it, and we shouldn’t admit to something we didn’t do. Otherwise, we’ll lose our dignity!” Qin Tian stopped Wade Griffin. This wasn’t about money; it was a matter of principle.
“Just tell me where you got your clothes!” Wu Kangping relaxed a little. He wasn’t after compensation; he simply wanted to know the origin of Wade Griffin’s clothes. He wanted that garment for himself!
“You’re so annoying! This was designed by Master Amir!” Wade Griffin replied.
“What? Quake Amir, the master designer?”
Wu Kangping’s eyes widened in shock. Quake Amir was a legend in the world of fashion design!
Swallowing hard, Wu Kangping realized that anyone who could wear something designed by Quake Amir must be a person of significant power and influence.
Moreover, most people would keep such garments safely stored away, only wearing them for important occasions—never as casually as this. Judging by that, this foreigner before him must have an extraordinary status.
Wu Kangping understood that today, he’d likely kicked an iron wall.
“What Master Amir? Never heard of him! You’re just making it up! Could he possibly compare to our Master Wu? Hurry up and pay up!” the woman in the cheongsam continued to shout, oblivious to the situation.
“Shut up!” Wu Kangping barked, startling her so much that she nearly jumped. She couldn’t understand why he had suddenly scolded her.
“I apologize; it was my foolishness,” Wu Kangping said hurriedly, directing his apology mostly to Wade Griffin. The garment he wore was a priceless treasure in Wu Kangping’s eyes. He had nearly desecrated it just now.
“May we leave now?” Wade Griffin asked.
“Yes!” Wu Kangping nodded emphatically. A piece designed by Quake Amir was not something he could ever covet.
“Master Wu, let me give you some advice. That shop assistant of yours is problematic,” Qin Tian said coolly.
His words sent a chill through the woman in the cheongsam. She immediately lowered her head in panic as Wu Kangping looked her way.
Wu Kangping frowned, hurried to the clothing rack, and felt a few of the garments. Instantly, his expression changed dramatically.
“You swapped in inferior clothes? Where did these come from?” Wu Kangping asked furiously.
“I... I...” The woman stammered, unable to utter a word.
Just then, Wu Kangping noticed a slip of paper among the boxes stacked in the corner. On it were listed details about some goods: Premium A-grade knockoffs, ten sets of Quake Amir-style traditional wear, sizes...
“You actually passed off fakes as the real thing!” Wu Kangping was livid.
“Master Wu, I was wrong! I truly was! I’ll never dare again!” the woman in the cheongsam cried, dropping to her knees with a thud.
Overcome by greed, she had secretly swapped out the genuine goods and sold them privately, replacing them with machine-made high-quality counterfeits hanging in the shop. None of these were handcrafted by Wu Kangping himself!
“What? These are all fakes? Then the clothes I’m wearing...”
“Good heavens! Selling counterfeits—how despicable!”
Many of the onlookers tugged at their own clothes in alarm; they had all bought from this very store.
Wu Kangping’s shop specialized in traditional garments but also sold other types—sportswear, shirts, and so on—all supposedly handmade.
“Are these clothes fake too? I want a refund! Give me my money back!” people began to shout.
Wu Kangping’s head throbbed. If only he hadn’t let his greed get the better of him and forced Qin Tian and the others to stay.
Now, thanks to the foolish greed of that woman in the cheongsam, not only had she sold fakes, but she had been exposed in front of everyone!
Wu Kangping’s reputation was likely ruined for good.
“One more thing: the surveillance footage was probably deleted by your shop assistant under the pretense of going to the restroom. And as for the dirtied garment, it’s very likely she did it herself, hoping to pin the blame on us,” Qin Tian added coldly, nearly causing the woman in the cheongsam to faint from rage and shame.
“Is that true?” Wu Kangping demanded.
“Yes... yes, it was me. I dirtied it by accident and was afraid you’d fine me, so I tried to hide it,” she admitted in defeat, collapsing weakly to the floor.
“Let’s go,” Qin Tian said, leading Jiang Yingying, Shen Xiaoqing, and Wade Griffin away.
Neither Wu Kangping nor the woman in the cheongsam were good people.
The woman had let greed get the better of her, swapping out genuine goods for fakes and selling off the originals; her exposure was well-deserved.
As for Wu Kangping, his own greed for the superbly crafted garment on Wade Griffin had led him to try and learn its secrets, only for Qin Tian to outwit him and expose the fakes in his own store.
In the end, Wu Kangping could only blame himself and deserved no sympathy.
